The Waterford based coast guard helicopter carried out an unusual rescue yesterday.

They were called to airlift a person to hospital from the Hook Lighthouse.

The patient was stretchered down the 77 steps of the lighthouse to the waiting helicopter.

The patient was flown back to Waterford Airport and handed over to Waterford Ambulance Paramedics.

Rescue 117 crew highlighted the professionalism of the lighthouse staff and Fethard-on-Sea Coast Guard ground unit who enabled the rescue to be conducted in a safe and effective manner.
