The Irish Coast Guard helicopter base at Waterford Airport has completed its transition to Bristow Ireland Limited.

The move marks the final phase of the national changeover to a new Coast Guard aviation service. Waterford is the fourth and final base to transition under the new contract.

The change brings an end to the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter fleet, which supported search and rescue operations in Ireland for more than 20 years.

National Service Transition Completed

Bristow Ireland already operates Coast Guard helicopter services from Shannon, Sligo and Weston Airport in Dublin. These bases use AW189 helicopters.

The new contract also includes a fixed-wing aviation service, based at Shannon.

The transition ensures continuity of service. Many personnel who previously worked with CHC Ireland have moved, or will move, into roles with Bristow Ireland.

Recognition of Long-Standing Service

Minister of State with responsibility for the Irish Coast Guard, Sean Canney TD, acknowledged the contribution of the outgoing fleet and crews.

He said the Sikorsky helicopters and CHC crews played a critical role in saving lives. They provided day-and-night emergency support to coastal and inland communities, often in extreme conditions.

He also welcomed the retention of experienced personnel, saying their expertise will continue to strengthen Coast Guard aviation services.

Focus on Safety and Continuity

Director of the Irish Coast Guard, Micheál O’Toole, said safety remained the priority throughout the transition.

He praised the professionalism shown during the changeover. He also recognised the long-term contribution of CHC crews and the reliability of the Sikorsky 92 aircraft.

Mr O’Toole said the Coast Guard now looks ahead to a new phase of enhanced aviation services.

Waterford’s Ongoing Role

The completion of the transition confirms Waterford Airport’s ongoing role in national search and rescue operations.

It also marks a significant milestone in the modernisation of Ireland’s Coast Guard aviation service.
