Waterford City Fire Service are urging people to check their smoke alarms ahead of Christmas time.
Ahead of changing habits around the festive period, Chief Fire Officer Niall Curtin says there will be additional hazards around the home.
Highlighting the importance of working smoke alarms, he says people must be aware this Christmas.
"Test your smoke alarms, and if you don't have any, install them," he said.
Last year over the Christmas period, Waterford's Fire Service attended over 18 callouts.
"They ranged from sitting room and bedroom fires to actual chimney fires," he said.
When discussing chimney fires, Niall highlighted the danger of them. He also advises that people get their chimneys swept at least once a year.
"Everything changes at Christmas. Our habits and what we bring into the house allow for additional hazards to arise and often be overlooked."
