Rob, who is autistic, has faced significant challenges, including sensory issues and safety concerns. His family's life took a transformative turn when Aggie, a specially trained autism assistance dog, joined them in January last year. Since then, Aggie has provided Rob with the stability and comfort needed to manage his sensory issues, resulting in a calmer and happier home.
Rob's mother Anna expressed her gratitude for the support they have received: "Since Aggie joined our family, Rob's meltdowns have virtually stopped, and he is now able to self-regulate with Aggie's help. This has brought a sense of peace to our household, and we can finally do things collectively as a family. Aggie has truly transformed our lives."
Rob attends Scoil Mhuire Butlerstown who has been particularly supportive of Rob and the entire family. Their commitment to inclusivity and providing the right support has been invaluable, ensuring Rob is included in all activities, and tailoring their approach to meet his unique needs. This support extends beyond the classroom, with staff and students alike showing understanding and compassion, which has made a significant difference in Rob's daily life.
The 2024 Woodie’s Heroes campaign aims to raise enough funds to train five to six assistance dogs, each costing €25,000, thereby supporting more families like the Grace-Powers.
