Workers at Waterford board games company, Cartamundi Ireland, have been told changes could be coming because of a reduced demand from its customers globally.

The game manufacturer, based on the Cork Road, says demand has dropped after the pandemic.

In a statement to WLR News, Barry Morrissey, Managing Director of Cartamundi Ireland explained: "After the last two years of heightened demand for board games during the Covid pandemic, there is now a corresponding surplus in volume in the market place.

"Combined with other global events including the war in Ukraine and rising energy costs creating a more cautious consumer, demand for consumer goods, including board games, has reduced across European and US markets.”

Mr Morrissey added, "Based on discussions with our customers and their expectations, we remain confident in the future of the plant in Waterford.

"We very much appreciate the cooperation of our workforce through these times and will work with them to provide any support needed.”

Cartamundi have been operating out of Waterford since 1977.

They manufacture games that include some of the most recognisable in the world, such as Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Guess Who, Connect 4, Battleships, Cluedo, Top Trumps, 30 Seconds, Sequence and many others.
