Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has advocated for the transformation of Waterford Airport into a European centre for drone technology.

The matter will be discussed during a European Parliament debate in Strasbourg this Thursday.

The session will examine the EU’s readiness to meet modern security challenges, including the rapidly expanding use of drones in defence, emergency response, environmental monitoring and other critical sectors.

Ní Mhurchú said the South East is uniquely positioned to lead Europe in this fast-growing field. “Drones are no longer niche tools. They are essential technologies for defence, search and rescue, maritime security, environmental monitoring, agriculture and policing our coastlines,” she said.

“If Europe wants to lead in this space, we must invest strategically and at scale – and Ireland, particularly the South East, can be at the forefront of that ambition.”

She stated that Waterford Airport presents a high-potential opportunity, especially given its proximity to South East Technological University (SETU).

“Waterford Airport, in partnership with SETU, could provide a controlled environment for training, testing and research into cutting-edge drone systems. With Government backing, this could become a flagship project not just for Ireland, but for Europe.”

Ní Mhurchú emphasised the significant jobs potential associated with building a dedicated drone innovation centre in the South East.

She said the region could benefit from high-value employment in engineering, software development, data analysis, manufacturing, maintenance and specialist training.

“By investing now, we can create a sustainable pipeline of skilled employment, attract international investment and ensure our graduates can build their careers at home rather than being forced to leave the region.”

The proposal is in tandem with the EU’s growing focus on security and technological capability.

Ní Mhurchú has urged the Government to work with SETU, Waterford Airport and European partners to advance the project.
