The Waterford Airport sale to a private investor has been welcomed by Independent councillor Declan Barry, who represents Waterford City East and serves as a Director on the board of the airport.

“I’m delighted with today’s vote. This is the most positive news we’ve had for Waterford Airport in many years,” Cllr Barry said after the council’s decision.

Investor Vetted and Ready to Invest

Addressing criticism of the sale, Cllr Barry said the investor had been fully vetted and operates successful businesses across the US and Europe. “No fairy godmother was going to come along with €30 million to get this project off the ground,” he remarked.

Next Steps for Waterford Airport Project

A further vote by the plenary council will take place on 11 November. Cllr Barry said he hopes construction can begin shortly after, with the goal of resuming commercial flights by summer 2027.

Commercial Viability and Regional Growth

Cllr Barry stated that the Waterford Airport sale to a private investor would help deliver financial stability, estimating that around 400,000 passengers per year are needed for viability. He said Dublin Airport is “bursting at the seams” and that regional airports like Waterford can provide much-needed capacity relief.

Public Support and Election Conversations

Reflecting on public sentiment, Cllr Barry noted that the airport was a major issue during the 2024 local elections. “Every second person on the doors was raising the airport. It was a big issue, especially in the east of the county,” he said.

Lack of Government Funding Criticised

He criticised both current and previous governments for offering little financial support. “Cork got funding, Dublin got funding. Waterford got zero,” he said, calling for fairer investment in regional infrastructure.

Boost for Business and the Local Economy

Cllr Barry added that the Waterford Airport sale to a private investor will be a major economic driver for the southeast, helping attract businesses that rely on regional connectivity. “When companies are deciding where to locate, having a functioning airport makes a real difference,” he said.
