Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan and Junior Minister James Lawless have both received an assessment of the business case for Waterford Airport.

WLR has learned that the assessment was submitted to both Ministers in recent days.

Representatives of the board said last December they hoped there would be so-called “shovels in the ground” by March of this year to start extending the runway  – but it has not yet taken off.

The Board was asked to resubmit to the Department of Transport a business case they had compiled with a view to securing €12m of government funding towards the approximately €30m project.

There has been ongoing toing and froing over the summer but now it’s understood the Department has finally completed the assessment.

The Department says a high level of appraisal was necessary to ensure that due diligence is exercised in accordance with the Department’s “Transport Appraisal Framework

Their assessment has now been submitted to both Minister Ryan and Minister of State James Lawless for their consideration and everyone is now awaiting their response.
