As the June bank holiday approaches, the Coast Guard, RNLI, and Water Safety Ireland have issued a joint water safety appeal.
Many people in Waterford are expected to take advantage of the break and visit the coast and inland water.
The organisations are asking people to check that they have the correct equipment to enjoy their activities and that they know what to do in the event of an emergency.
As the popularity of kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding increases, ensure that you always have a means of calling for help.
Inflatables such as dinghies and air mattresses should never be used on open waters as they can quickly be blown away and capsized.
Other advice includes letting someone know where you are going and what time you expect to return, wearing a lifejacket or buoyancy aid, and always checking the weather forecast and sea conditions before you set off.
If you are exploring somewhere new, seek knowledge from experienced practitioners in the area and always paddle in a group.
”We want everybody to enjoy our waters but please pay attention to your own safety. Never ever swim alone," Irish Coast Guard Operations Manager Micheál O’Toole said.
