
The WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Awards 2025 will take place on Saturday, January 17th. One Waterford sports star will be crowned the overall WLR Granville Sports Award 2025 winner.
During 2025, 12 sports stars across Waterford were honoured with monthly awards. Now, the overall winner will be announced at The Granville Hotel Waterford on Saturday, January 17th.

2025 Monthly Winners:
January – Tom Ahern (Rugby)
Tom Ahern had an outstanding start to the year, starring for Munster in United Rugby Championship wins against Saracens and Dragons and featuring in a thrilling European Champions Cup clash against Northampton. His form earned him a call-up to the Ireland senior squad ahead of the Six Nations clash against Scotland, alongside signing a new long-term contract with Munster and the IRFU.
February – Kate and Sarah Hickey (Basketball)
Kate and Sarah Hickey were instrumental in the SETU Waterford Wildcats claiming their first regular season National Super League title in 24 years. The duo combined for 127 points across four wins and also represented Ireland in EuroBasket Qualifiers, contributing an additional 28 points for their country.
March – Joe Gough (Athletics)
Joe Gough achieved gold in the 800 metres and silver in the 1500 metres at the World Masters Indoors Championships in Florida. His 800m time of 2:31.73 and 1500m of 5:16.5 added to his record, giving him ten world gold medals in total.
April – Stephen Bennett (Hurling)
Ballysaggart’s Stephen Bennett led Waterford to the Division 1B Allianz National Hurling League title, scoring 0-12 in the win over Offaly. He finished the league with 1-48 and carried that form into the championship, scoring 2-8 on his 100th appearance as Waterford defeated the reigning All-Ireland champions for the first time since 2002.
May – Dean O’Mahony (Karate)
Dean O’Mahony claimed his fourth consecutive senior national karate title in May and represented Ireland at the European Karate Championships as part of a five-strong Irish squad.
June – James O’Connor (Hurling)
James O’Connor guided the Waterford minor hurlers to All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship glory, defeating Clare 1-18 to 0-11 in Thurles. It was Waterford’s first minor All-Ireland win since 2013 and their first All-Ireland at any age grade in nine years.
July – Tom Breen (Surfing)
Tom Breen competed at the European Surfing Championships in Portugal, finishing fourth in Longboard and helping the Irish team to third overall in the Eurosurf 2025 – marking the first time Ireland won two medals at the championships.
August – Anna Dawson (Golf)
Anna Dawson won her first major Irish senior title at the AIG Irish Women’s Close Championship and represented Ireland at the Home Internationals, winning all three of her foursomes matches and a crucial half-point in the singles, helping secure the overall title.
September – Dessie Hutchinson (Hurling)
Dessie Hutchinson starred as Ballygunner won their 12th consecutive Waterford Senior Hurling Championship, scoring 1-6 from play in the final. He also contributed three goals in football as Gaultier reached the Waterford Senior Football Championship semi-finals.
October – David McGlynn (Athletics)
David McGlynn became the first Waterford man in 32 years to be crowned national marathon champion, finishing the Irish Life Dublin Marathon in 2:10:59, just his second completed marathon.
November – Jayson Molumby (Soccer)
Jayson Molumby played a key role in the Republic of Ireland securing a playoff place for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring a late winner for West Bromwich Albion in the EFL Championship as they came from 2-0 down to beat Swansea 3-2.
December – Pauric Mahony (Hurling)
Pauric Mahony played a starring role as Ballygunner reached the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship Final for just the second time in their history. He scored 0-7, 0-2 from play and 0-5 from frees as the Gunners defeated Leinster champions St. Martin’s 0-19 to 0-10 to reach the decider. Mahony also contributed 0-7 in the Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship Final victory against Eire Og Inis, winning his fifth provincial medal.
