SETU’s proposal to introduce a new programme in veterinary medicine was discussed with the Taoiseach this week.

Eleanor Kent, Head of Land Sciences at SETU, raised the issue with Simon Harris during his visit to the Dungarvan Show on Sunday.

SETU’s proposals to create new programmes in pharmacy and veterinary medicine and expand the capacity of its existing nursing courses were included in the capacity-building options announced by the Government in 2023.

"We were deemed a successful proposal after an expert panel review by the HEA," Eleanor told WLR News.

"We're still waiting on an announcement as to where the new veterinary school is going to go."

She outlined the importance of such a development for Waterford and the South-East.

"We have a proud tradition of running agricultural science courses and very successful graduates coming from those programmes. It would give us a flagship course which would increase the profile of the new university. We have one of the largest land science departments in the country so it makes sense to put a veterinary school in SETU."
