The unsightly condition of the canopy at Waterford's Apple Market has been highlighted by a local Councillor.

The structure was opened by the Council in 2017 after a multi-million euro investment.

However, Fianna Fail Councillor Adam Wyse says it's in urgent need of cleaning.

"I just noticed it myself when walking through town the other day," he told the recent Metropolitan District meeting.

"I know it's six years now since we built it but I'd say it hasn't been cleaned once and I don't want this to end up being another Vincent Plaza situation.

"I actually have a photo of it from the day it was opened and you could see yourself in the reflection but you can't see anything now in the mirrors above your head - it actually looks quite mouldy and a bit yellowish."

Councillor Wyse has asked for the canopy to be cleaned and said that considering the amount of money spent by the council on it (over a million euro), and the fact that it's the first thing people see coming into the area, it should be cleaned as a matter of urgency.

Responding, Director of Services for Economic Development, Michael Quinn said it will be cleaned as part of an extensive city-wide works programme.

"We're doing the Apple Market," Mr Quinn told the same meeting, "We're also doing some other works along one or two of the streets where there's grass growing out of gutters and things like that.

"So that is in hand. I'll have it included in the next report just as to when it will be done - I don't know off the top of my head what the timetable is for it."
