Unannounced inspection at Waterford nursing home following reports made to HIQA

A Waterford city nursing home failed an unannounced inspection by HIQA under the area of Infection Control.

The findings of the inspection at Waterford Nursing Home, which took place on August 24 of this year were published by HIQA last week.

The inspection was conducted at the 60 capacity residential home in Ballinakill following receipt by HIQA of two pieces of unsolicited information in relation to the standard of environmental hygiene in the home.

Report Findings

Visibly unclean urinals were observed to be awaiting use, while staff were found to have not emptied and decontaminated urinals in the automated bedpan washed after each use.

Several bedrooms were unclean, with bedframes, bedtables and resident's equipment found to be visibly dirty.

Inspection of the bedrooms showed an absence of any deep cleaning record for the rooms, and a failure to implement the tagging system to identify equipment which had been cleaned.

The centre is operated by Mowlam Healthcare Services Unlimited Company who are the registered provider of Waterford Nursing Home.

Addressing the Report

Following the HIQA inspection, The Director of Nursing oversaw a deep clean in September, together with an overhauld of housekeeping procedures.

Furthermore, all staff have been made aware of all residents' needs in a bid to reduce cross-infection risks.

Further improvement plans are in place for early next year.
