The trolley situation in Irish hospitals is a result of the healthcare system not changing in '30 years'.

That's the view of an Irish GP after last week saw record numbers without a bed in Emergency Departments.

However, in University Hospital Waterford, just two people were waiting on trolleys yesterday according to the INMO figures, while five are today.

"University Hospital Waterford in particular has ben bucking the trend in the context of emergnecy department overcrowding," Liz Curran, South East Regional Rep with the INMO, told WLR.

The HSE's acting CEO, Stephen Mulvany was also reportedly on a visit to the local hospital to discuss topics including how busy they were over the Christmas period.

Nationally yesterday, nearly 100 people were waiting more than 24 hours on trolleys.

Dr Brendan O’Shea, GP and Trinity College Professor, says acute hospitals could be contributing to the problem.

"Smaller hospitals are known to be less efficient, they're less likely to able to introduce innovation," he said.
