Two Waterford women become the first same-sex couple in the county to be legally recognised as parents to their son

Two Waterford women have become the first same sex couple in the county to both be legally recognised as parents of their son.

Sinead Flynn-Fogarty and Siobhan Fogarty, who are parents to 2-year-old Sonny, appeared before Waterford District Court in the past week where their names were both added to their child's birth certificate.

It follows the enactment of the Children and Family Relationships Act, which first introduced in 2015 but came into effect last Wednesday.

Up until then, only the biological parent was listed on a child's birth cert.

Sinead Flynn-Fogarty spoke to Damien Tiernan about the experience.
