Tributes pour in locally and nationally for Nobel laureate John Hume

Tributes have been paid by world leaders past and present, for the role he played in Northern Ireland's peace process and civil rights movement.

His remains will be taken from Moville in Donegal to the Cathedral of Saint Eugene in Derry, arriving at 8:30 this evening, with mass tomorrow at 11.30am.

People in Waterford have also been been paying tribute the impact Mr. Hume had on Irish society.

Waterford Auctioneer Des Purcell, who was a personal friend, spoke to Maria McCann on Deise Today about the private and public personas of the former SDLP leader.

"On a one to one he was very down to earth and loved the craic," he said. "He had a vision and was profoundly single minded. Look at the tributes which have been paid at the highest level, Blair, Clinton, et al.

Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane said John Hume navigated 'The Troubles' with tremendous dignity.

"What people lived through was horrendous," he said. "It was a really difficult time and John Hume was born into all that and had to navigate his way through all that. To do all that with the dignity he did showed right throughout, I think, is a measure of the man."

An online Book of Condolence for the late John Hume has been opened by the Mayor of Waterford Councillor Damien Geoghegan.

When complete, it will be forwarded on to The Hume Family on behalf of the people of Waterford.
