Lifeguards in Tramore rescued multiple swimmers from the water on Tramore beach yesterday (Tuesday) evening.
Although Waterford Council did not specify how many people were taken from the water, WLR news understands four people were rescued at around 5.30pm.
The local authority said the "fast thinking and swift action of the lifeguards" got the incident under control.
The casualties were removed from the water and were treated for cold and shock. They were then brought by the National Ambulance Service to University Hospital Waterford for further treatment.
In a statement, Waterford council acknowledged "the tremendous service" given by lifeguards trained by Water Safety Ireland to the highest international standards.
In Waterford currently there are lifeguards on duty full time from 11am to 7pm daily at the Blue Flag beaches of Dunmore East, Tramore, Clonea and Ardmore.
