Waterford City and County Council has expressed confidence that Tramore's International Blue Flag status will be restored next year.
Yesterday (May 20th) - An Taisce announced the International Blue Flag and Green Coast Award recipients for 2024.
Tramore, is one of three beaches nationally that did not retain its Blue Flag for 2024. This is as a result of a single poor water quality result from August 2020, when in the aftermath of Storm Ellen on August 18th exceptionally heavy rain and strong winds gave rise to excessive levels of bacteria in the bathing waters.
Waterford Council acknowledged these findings in a statement:
"As bathing water quality is assessed on test results over a four-year period, this single poor result has had the effect of bringing the overall average for the period from ‘Excellent’ to ‘Good’ quality status. Every single water sample taken in Tramore since Storm Ellen in August 2020 to date has demonstrated exceptionally good quality bathing water and well within the criteria for ‘Excellent’ status."
Waterford City and County Council, while disappointed at the outcome, would be confident that the Blue Flag status will be restored for next season.
Ardmore and Clonea retained Blue Flag status and all seven of Waterford beaches have retained their Green Coast Awards in 2024. These include Guillamene Cove, Newtown Cove, Kilfarrassey, Annestown, Ballyquin, Curragh and Goat Island Beach. The Green Coast Award recognises beaches for their clean environment, excellent water quality and natural beauty.
