Three year wait time for electric buses in Waterford

It will likely be another three years before electric buses are rolled out in Waterford.

That's according to the CEO of Bus Éireann Stephen Kent who says Athlone already have their new fleet of zero-emission/low-carbon buses.

However, he says when it does happen, the various elements of the Bus Connects transport plan will lead to massive growth in the use of public transport.

He added: "Waterford City is down the list when it comes to fully electric service. Athlone has just happened in the past couple of weeks, it was a pathfinder project that was the first.

"Limerick will happen before the end of this year and then there is the electrification of Cork that is going to happen."

Waterford received a new range of buses in 2018 that replaced the previous red and white Bus Éireann models.

Stephen continued to say:" It will probably be the end of 2025/2026 when we move in with the electric fleet here.

The fleet that we have here for Waterford City was purchased in 2018. From that point of view, there will be a natural transition period.

You will see that fleet transition into a low-emission and zero-emission fleet which will be good for the environment."
