A number of secondary school children in Dunmore East have been left without a means of school transport this year.

That's according to local councillors, who say they've been contacted by more distressed parents for this school term, than for any previous term.

It comes as more than 44,000 first-time applicants applied for a seat on the Bus Éireann school transport scheme when the government scrapped the fee this year.

However, capacity on the service wasn't increased.

Cllr. Pat Fitzgerald says it's been an issue with many years and is not exclusive to Dunmore East.

"This is a problem right throughout the county and the country," he said

Apparently, there are "grey areas" in the legislation when it comes to deciding what children are eligible and what ones are not.

Local authorities have received €6.3 million in funding, and Councillor FitzGerald believes some of that should go towards school transport.

He also believes that parents should call their local representatives and "let them have it."
