Thousands attend funeral service for Craig Breen

Thousands of mourners have attended the funeral of Waterford rally driver Craig Breen today.

The 33-year-old was laid to rest after Requiem Mass in The Sacred Heart Church, Ferrybank.

His funeral cortege travelled from his native Slieverue and was led by a rally car that Craig had restored, belonging to his idol Frank Meagher.

Speaking to WLR News, Parish Priest, Fr Kieran O'Shea said the sense of shock within the community at Craig's death is palpable.

"The crowds that have gathered give an indication of the great respect and esteem in which he was held by the local community," he said.

"Our thoughts are with his family - they are devastated. Craig brought so much joy to this community, country and beyond.  He was full of enthusiasm for family, friends and life and he never forgot his roots. It's a really sad day for everybody."

A large screen was erected in the church graveyard.

A guard of honour was provided by children from St. Mary's Boys National School as Craig's funeral cortege passed en route to the church.

"We were all deeply saddened to hear of Craig's passing over the Easter break," said Principal James Robinson.

"We thought it was important that we show how highly he was thought of in the school community and how deeply respected he was."

Pupils formed a guard of honour outside St. Mary's Boys National School.

He continued: "There's a real sense of pride amongst the pupils. They see his pictures on the walls of the school. Even those who never had the opportunity to meet Craig all knew about his achievements."

During the Funeral Mass, Craig's sister, Kellie, fondly outlined some of the characteristics of her beloved younger brother.

"Craig would do anything to avoid making people upset," she said.

"It seems so cruel that his family and friends are living through such hurt. He'd hate to see tears shed on his behalf. He'd much rather see people share good times and relive fond memories."

Friend and broadcaster Mike Chen said Craig was "as genuine as they came".

Making reference to Craig's well-known love of a cuppa, he said: "Sadly the tea industry is mourning the biggest drop in sales since February 1990".

The regional road between Slieverue and Ferrybank was closed for a period with diversions in place to facilitate the large crowds in attendance, while the multi-storey car park at Ferrybank Shopping Centre remained open all day.

Craig was laid to rest in the adjoining churchyard cemetery following Requiem Mass.
