Leo Varadkar will be in the City for the naming and commissioning ceremony of a new Naval Service vessel.

He will also be canvassing for a yes vote for a directly elected mayor.

The L.É. Bernard Shaw is the fourth and final ship of the P60 class dubbed the ‘Playright sisters’.

The vessel was accepted into State service in October of last year, and, following a military fit-out, has commenced Maritime Defence and Security Operations at sea.

This afternoon Minister for Defence Paul Kehoe, in the presence of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will host the naming and commissioning ceremonies at Frank Cassin Wharf in Waterford City.

The Taoiseach will then be joined by Senator Paudie Coffey for a canvass for a yes vote in the upcoming plebiscite on a directly elected mayor.

The May 24th vote will ask the people of Waterford, Cork City and Limerick if they want to directly elect a mayor with executive functions for a five-year term.

An Taoiseach and Senator Coffey will be joined on the canvass in Waterford City Centre by Fine Gael MEP candidates Seán Kelly and Deirdre Clune.
