Teenager arrested for stabbing of Waterford army chaplain

A teenager has been arrested and is being detained at a Garda station in the west of the country following a stabbing last night.

At approximately 10.45pm, Gardaí and members of the Armed Response Unit responded to the incident outside Renmore Barracks in Galway.

Waterford army chaplain, Fr. Paul. F. Murphy, aged in his 50s received a number of stab wounds and was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries.

They have been described as non life-threatening.

It's believed that a teenager approached Fr. Murphy outside the barracks, armed with a knife.

Army personnel detained the attacker and prevented the injuries from becoming more serious.

Speaking on social media today, Fr. Murphy thanked those who have sent well wishes and support his way.

He said: "I'm doing okay, just awaiting surgery, all will be well."

Fr. Murphy has been stationed in Galway with the Defense Forces for the last 12 years, and remains a committed member of the Order of Malta.
