The Taoiseach has told the Dail he will seek an update on the Waterford Airport business case. Waterford Independent TD Matt Shanahan outlined this week that the business case has been before the Department of Transport for 19 weeks.

The situation has been described as 'fragile' as the Airport Board continues to engage with the Department of Transport regarding the long-awaited runway extension. Deputy Shanahan sought a commitment from Taoiseach Simon Harris.

"Are you working to realise the hopes and aspirations of the people of Waterford? The Airport is a particular focus." Taoiseach, accepting high office, you said that you would work every day to realise the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of all our people.

"Well, the people of the Southeast have seen €125 million of public money put into regional airports that excluded Waterford. We see the €2 billion in capital funding for Dublin Airport, and that is before discussion regarding the Dublin Metro boondoggle that the state is about to embark on.

"The previous Taoiseach's of this 33rd Dail have committed to Waterford Airport. The Waterford, Wexford, and Kilkenny Councils have agreed to put in money that is private capital on the table, and the Government risk is capped at €12 million yet we see the business case is languishing in the Department. You have the business case for 19 weeks now Taoiseach, and you know the work must start this summer."

In response, Taoiseach Simon Harris said," I will seek an update from the Minister For Transport in relation to that business case and I appreciate that point you made."
