Tánaiste Launches New Special Education Class at St Ursula’s as Waterford Prepares for Major Expansion
Waterford has taken a significant step forward in special education provision following a visit by Tánaiste Simon Harris to St Ursula’s School yesterday, where he officially launched a new special education class.
The opening forms part of a wider expansion across the county, with up to seven new special education classes approved for the 2026/27 school year.
The rollout includes four post‑primary and three primary classes, supporting a growing need for specialised educational places in the region.
Schools set to benefit include but are not limited to:
- Ard Scoil na nDéise
- Ard Scoil na Mara
- Waterpark College
- Presentation Secondary
- Scoil an Baile Nua
- Bunscoil Bothar na Naomh
- Mount Sion CBS
Speaking to WLR during his visit, Tánaiste Simon Harris said it was heartening to see children flourishing in learning environments that meet their needs. He acknowledged, however, that many challenges remain for parents seeking appropriate supports and placements.
"When parents have to travel a significant distance, these are significant challenges, we have announced a number of new special classes and we will announce many more in the weeks ahead."
Further special‑class allocations for Waterford are expected to be announced in the coming weeks as the Department continues its work to expand provision.
Minister of State John Cummins also welcomed the development, saying the additional classes respond directly to rising demand and will provide “much‑needed support for local families.” He praised St Ursula’s as a strong example of what can be achieved when schools, parents, and Government work together.
Tánaiste Harris echoed this sentiment, describing St Ursula’s as “a great example of what can be achieved” when inclusive education is prioritised.
"we have made objectively a lot of progress on special education, but the demand is there, there is a need to do a hell of a lot more. Examples like this school show us the way forward, with really high quality schools and classrooms."
The expansion marks one of the most substantial increases in special education capacity in Waterford in recent years, aiming to ensure that every child in the county has access to the supports they need in their own community.
