'Tacky' signage is having a negative impact on the reputation of Waterford City Centre.

That's according to a local councillor who expressed concerns at the November Metropolitan District meeting of Waterford Council.

Councillor Jason Murphy outlined his views on the appearance of some commercial signage and called for action.

"You need to put your best foot forward - cities are often judged by the signage we have over our commercial premises," he said.

"Could Planning carry out an audit of signage in the city centre with a view to improving the appearance of some of the tacky signage that we have in our city centre?"

Senior Planner Liam McGree said enforcement action could be taken against shops which have established new signage without planning permission. He also committed to carrying out an audit on shopfronts within the city centre in January.

"We will be taking action where necessary," he added.
