A major emergency services demonstration took place at St. Declan's Community College, Kilmacthomas today.

The Rescue 117 helicopter landed at the school where Gardaí, members of the Fire Service, Coastguard and Community First Responders also gathered.

The event was designed to give Transition Year students an insight into the work of the various agencies.

School Principal, Gráinne Walsh, explained how the idea came about.

"Fortunately, I could rely on very committed staff members including Colm Curran and Michael Meleady who liaised with the services to get today's event up and running," she said.

"It's incredibly important for our students to be able to see the fabulous work that is undertaken by these services and to learn about the level of commitment and the ongoing training they need to undertake to ensure the smooth running of these essential services."

She added: "We were delighted to welcome the various groups on site and we actually have a lot of past pupils involved in each of the groups which attended today."

One such past pupil in attendance was Officer in Charge with Bonmahon Coastguard Brian Fleming.

He told WLR News that the students at St. Declan's really engaged with all of the services.

"It went really well and I think the teachers were very happy with it," he said.

"An event like this really opens the students' minds to different careers they can pursue and they got to ask loads of questions."
