Farmers are being urged to engage early with banks if needed as one organisation has warned that the "fallout of the extremely wet and lengthy winter will be long-term".

Following meetings with two of the main banks - AIB and Bank of Ireland - farmers who are worried about their farm finances have been encouraged to seek help and advice.

The need for support for farmers was raised in the Dail by Matt Shanahan. He says the Government's approach to supporting farmers has been ill-considered.

"They are reducing support to food producers in the fields, and it is ill-considered, unwise and indeed, irresponsible. Ireland's commercial tillage sector has seen its cap-designated supports reduced drastically over the last 20 years. This will lead to what is a plant-based food system becoming uneconomic and unsustainable.

"The Government recently introduced measures, but these are merely sticking plasters being applied to a very seriously sick sector. The tillage sector in Ireland is very kind to the environment with the lowest CO2 emissions and should be used as a vital national asset."
