Storm Barra: Schools in Waterford advised to close

Schools in Waterford have been advised to close tomorrow due to the status orange wind warning issued by Met Éireann.

The Department of Education is advising that all schools covered by the Red and Orange warnings should not open tomorrow.

It says all schools should keep up-to-date with the current weather warnings and in particular any change in the status warning for their area.

In a statement from the Department of Education it says:

Met Éireann has advised that there is a strong possibility that the status of parts of these counties currently in status orange are likely to change and escalate to status red.

Due to the significant nature of Storm Barra, as forecast by Met Éireann and to give sufficient notice to schools and parents/guardians, the Department is advising that all schools covered by the Red Alert and Orange warning from Met Éireann should not open tomorrow, 7 December.

All schools should keep up-to-date with the current weather warnings which are carried on all national and local news bulletins and in particular any change in the status warning for their area.

Car Ferry

The Passage East Car Ferry will also not operate tomorrow due to the Orange Wind Warning issued for Waterford.

In a statement issued on social media company said: "Due to the incoming storm Barra we will not be sailing at 07:00 tomorrow Tuesday Dec 7th.

"Very strong winds are forecast and there's a very high tide at approx 08:30. Once the tide starts to drop we can reassess."

The situation will be reviewed again tomorrow morning, and updates will be posted on the Passage East Ferry Company's social media accounts.

Tramore Races

The races also due to take place in Tramore on Tuesday have been postponed.
