Met Éireann has issued Status Yellow Rain and Wind Warnings for Waterford as Storm Chandra brings heavy rainfall and strong gusts across the county.
A Status Yellow Rain Warning has been in effect since midnight on Tuesday and will remain in place until 11pm tonight. Forecasters warn that heavy and persistent bands of rain, falling on already saturated ground, could lead to localised flooding and difficult travel conditions.
A Status Yellow Wind Warning will also apply from 5am until 11pm on Tuesday, with strong and gusty winds expected, particularly in coastal and exposed areas.
Risk of Flooding and Hazardous Conditions
Met Éireann says the combination of intense rainfall and strong winds increases the risk of surface water flooding, river flooding, fallen trees, loose debris and wave overtopping. Tidal flooding may also occur along parts of the coast.
Waterford City and County Council has confirmed that its Severe Weather Management Team is actively monitoring conditions. Ground crews remain on standby to respond to issues such as blocked drains, gulley overflows and localised flooding.
Travel and Public Safety Advice
The council urges the public to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary journeys while the warnings remain in place. Drivers should slow down, increase stopping distances and remain alert for standing water, fallen branches and debris on roads.
Motorists should never drive through flooded roads. If a road appears flooded, drivers should turn back and find an alternative route. The council also reminds road users to remain mindful of pedestrians and cyclists, who face increased risk in poor conditions.
Coastal and Flood Safety Warnings
Authorities advise the public to stay away from coastal areas due to high seas. The Irish Coast Guard continues to urge people to “Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry.”
People should also avoid swollen rivers, streams, canal paths and flooded riverbanks, as banks may collapse without warning. Floodwater may contain sewage, chemicals or sharp debris, and contact should be avoided.
Power and Emergency Services
ESB Networks has warned of the danger posed by fallen live wires during storm conditions. Members of the public should stay clear and report incidents immediately. Power restoration updates are available via PowerCheck.
Residents are advised to keep mobile phones fully charged and monitor Met Éireann forecasts for the latest updates.
