Some of the country’s most disadvantaged schools are set to receive an extra 400 staff under a new education support scheme.

The DEIS Plus programme will provide almost 50 million euro in funding to 120 urban schools.

That includes 96 primary and 25 post-primary schools.

Under the new announcement, St. Saviours National School in Waterford City will now be classed as a Deis Plus School.

There is no change to any Post-Primary Schools in the region.

Elsewhere, Waterford Educate Together National School will receive an extension to the Home School Liaison Programme.

Education Minister Hildegarde Naughton, says the plan is aimed at tackling educational disadvantage and improving supports for students most in need:

"It is really important that we continue to support schools where there is educational disadvantage."

"There will be 121 schools part of the Deis Plus Scheme, where there will be targeted supports for those schools across the country."
