A Waterford Councillor says residents of a City Centre estate have been left with major problems accessing their homes.

Fianna Fail’s Jason Murphy says he’s contacted on a weekly basis by homeowners in Spring Garden Alley, who say that temporary barriers on John Street have made vehicular access difficult.

He says the temporary barriers are being erected on an “ad-hoc” basis.

“It seems to happen unbeknownst to the Council,” he says, “what it’s doing to the residents is – they have to stop their car on John Street, physically pull back therse barriers to get up to the official council barrier which they have a fob for.”

Councillor Murphy says residents have been left frustrated by a lack of accountability for the barriers.

“Nobody seems to be taking ownership of the road closures” he says adding that he has spoken to officials in the council, including Director of Roads, Fergus Galvin.

“He has told me he has seized barriers down there, but when he removes these barriers they seem to reappear.”
