Gardaí in Waterford are reminding people never to give out financial information over the phone.

They say people as well as businesses are currently being targeted by a number of different scams.

Crime Prevention Sergeant at Waterford City Station, Brendan Roche said they’ve seen numerous examples over the past six weeks.

“One of them was a tax refund fraud, where people ring to say you’re due a tax refund. ‘Just give me your tax details and we’ll put it into your bank for you.'”

Sgt. Roche recommends people requesting any tax refund to be posted rather than giving out bank details.

Similarly, people should contact their local branch if they receive a call telling them that funds are missing from their account.

Sgt. Roche also warned businesses to be aware that fake €50 notes are still in circulation around the city and are being involved in change frauds, where scammers try to exchange them for legitimate money.
