A Waterford Sinn Féin Councillor this week called on the local authority to change plans to visit Boston for St Patrick’s Day.
John Hearne raised the issue at the plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council, suggesting Mayor Seamus Ryan visit Canada instead.
He explained that US President Donald Trump’s stance on various matters, including Greenland, was the reason for his suggestion.
Councillor Hearne was informed by Director of Services Ivan Grimes that flights for the trip to Boston have been booked and the visit will proceed as planned.
Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil Councillor Jason Murphy criticised the suggestion – and highlighted the economic benefits of visiting the US.
He added it was “a bit hypocritical” for Sinn Féin to put forward the suggestion “when they themselves attend events all over the States” such as “a thousand dollar a plate meals”.
“I suppose money talks,” he said.
