A strong and unpleasant smell has been reported in parts of Waterford City Centre this afternoon.

The odour was noticed around Johnstown, the Applemarket, and Parnell Street, with some pedestrians seen holding their noses as they passed through the area.

One business in the vicinity closed its doors temporarily, citing the strength of the smell.

Speaking to WLR, one person described it as “like wet dog,” while another said it resembled a “burning sewage” smell.

Several residents surrounding the city centre have also contacted WLR this morning expressing their concerns, with one resident from Parnell Street saying he was leaving the vicinity until the smell subsides.

Source of the smell

It has been confirmed to WLR this afternoon by Waterford Council that the source of the smell is coming from a factory located in Waterford City. The Council also noted that the situation is outside of its remit and falls within the Environmental Protection Agency.

WLR has since reached out to the EPA for comment.
