SETU have welcomed the launch of the Unmute Consent Campaign which aims to drive positive conversation on consent.

It's hoped that the campaign will help bring an end to sexual violence and harassment.

It will also seek to mobilise campuses to make a difference by encouraging speaking out against unacceptable behaviour.

Dr Allison Kenneally says a lot of research went into campaign and she says it's a topic that had to be addressed.

"Students want to participate in the training and, I suppose, they want to learn more about this issue because it is something that affects so many of them unfortunately," she said.

Dr Kenneally says the campaign involves regular consultation with students.

SETU have been doing training on consent for the past three years. They include it as part of first years' orientation.

More information on the campaign can be found on the Unmute Consent Campaign website.

There people can also make reports of cases of sexual assault. This can be done anonymously if desired.

All higher education institutions are currently implementing a wide range of measures within the National Consent Framework.

The campaign was informed by findings from the National Survey of Student Experiences of Sexual Violence and Harassment in Irish Higher Education Institutions (HEI), and the Active Consent Sexual Experiences Survey (2020), as well as the experience of HEIs in researching and implementing action plans to educate and raise awareness about consent, and to combat sexual violence and harassment.
