South East Technological University (SETU) is celebrating national recognition for two of its academics at the 2025 Business Post Women in STEM Awards, held at Dublin’s Mansion House on 23 October.

Dr Sheila Donegan, Lecturer in Chemistry and Director of Calmast STEM Engagement Centre, won the Women in STEM Award for Maths, while Dr Amanda Barry, Lecturer in the Department of Health and Sport Science, nominated in the Rising Star category.

Championing Mathematics Through Innovation

As co-founder of Maths Week Ireland, Dr Donegan has transformed how mathematics is celebrated nationwide.

Through her leadership at Calmast, Maths Week has reached over 4.3 million pupils, earning international recognition for promoting creativity and confidence in maths, particularly among young women.

Dr Donegan said the award was a reflection of collaboration:

“It’s a huge honour, but it really belongs to the thousands of teachers, students and volunteers who have helped make Maths Week such a success. Seeing young people — especially girls — embrace maths with confidence is deeply rewarding.”

Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists

Dr Amanda Barry described her nomination as “humbling and inspiring.” adding:

“For me, STEM is about opening doors and making physics accessible to everyone. I want to inspire people to stretch their imaginations and use what they learn to change lives.”

Earlier this year, Dr Barry and fellow physics lecturer Dr Gary Cahill invited 100 SETU Health and Sport Science students to explore the physics of surfing, bringing science to life through outdoor learning.

SETU’s Leadership in STEM Engagement

Dr Helen Murphy, Head of the Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning, praised Dr Donegan’s award as “national recognition for two decades of leadership in STEM engagement.”

Professor Marie Claire Van Hout, Vice President for Research, Innovation and Impact, added:

“Sheila’s work has transformed how maths is perceived, while Amanda represents the next generation of STEM leaders. Their recognition is a source of pride for the entire university.”
