A section of the Shaws Department Store in Dungarvan is set to close.

Founded in 1864 by Henry Shaw, the company began as a small drapery shop in Mountmellick, Co. Laois. The department store has two locations in the town, one of which primarily houses electrical products.

In a statement to WLR, a spokesperson from the company said the changes will allow them to concentrate their product range in one location.

"Shaws has confirmed to staff in Dungarvan that the company remains committed to the town and will consolidate its business in its store on Main Street which will benefit from a refurbishment early in the New Year."

The spokesperson continued, "Shaws has been in Dungarvan for almost 50 years. In recent years, the company has operated from two premises in the town with the large Shaws store on Main Street and a separate Home and Electrical store on Mary Street.

"Going forward, Shaws will invest in the store on Main Street and will consolidate its activities in that location. The range of products in that store will expand to include its range of homeware products and additional women’s fashion brands.

"However, the company will cease distributing electrical products in the town and will close its second premises which housed these products on Mary Street."
