The build on the second Cath lab at University Hospital Waterford will be completed in the next couple of days.

That's according to the Health Minister, Stephen Donnelly.

The Minister was visiting the Waterford Primary Care Center on John's Hill today where he launched two new initiatives.

He told WLR, that staff are being hired and the lab should be open on a phased basis in the first quarter of next year.

"The staff are being hired and the advice I have is that there will be staff in place to open it on a phased basis as soon as the commissioning is complete," he said.

The commissioning period is expected to last up to 12 weeks.

Minister Donnelly added that the HSE is endeavoring to make sure that all urgent care including chemotherapy happens as quickly as possible.

He was speaking following reports that a total of 62 chemotherapy appointments for children were cancelled during a three month period this year.

He told WLR that it's something the HSE is looking at.

"Every child or adult who needs their chemotherapy, who needs to be able to get it when it is clinically indicated, they should have," he said.
