A search operation is continuing off the Waterford coast, for a man believed to have fallen overboard from a yacht.

The UK-registered vessel was 30 kilometres south of Dunmore East when the alert was raised, and a second person on board was brought safely to shore.

Crews from the Irish Coast Guard and the RNLI, along with a fixed wing aircraft from the UK, have all been taking part in the search.

The rescue began when an alert was raised at about 10.40pm on Saturday by another individual who was still onboard the UK registered vessel.

The UK Coast Guard was also contacted after the person said they believed the vessel was off the coast of Swansea in Wales.

However, the Irish Coast Guard situated the vessel off the coast of Ceann Heilbhic.

The yacht was travelling from Brighton to Swansea via Falmouth.

In a statement, the Coast Guard said: “The Coast Guard Coordination centre in Dublin is continuing the search for a missing Male having gone overboard from a UK registered yacht late last night. A comprehensive search of an area 16 Nautical South of Dunmore East was conducted through the night and up to Midday today. The search will continue into the afternoon with the Coast Guard helicopter from Waterford and the Dunmore Lifeboat coordinated by the Coast Guard.”
