Plans for new school buildings Waterford have received conditional approval, paving the way for additional classrooms and facilities at two primary schools in the city.

Alphonsus Cullinan sought permission from Waterford City and County Council for three single-storey school buildings on Military Road.

New classrooms and SEN facilities planned

The approved school buildings Waterford development will see new structures installed at Holy Family Junior School and Our Lady of Mercy Senior Primary School.

Two of the buildings will include Special Educational Needs classrooms, along with new fenced soft play areas designed to support students.

Plans also include new fencing and gates for the playground at Our Lady of Mercy Senior Primary School.

Conditions attached to planning approval

Waterford City and County Council granted permission subject to a number of conditions.

These include restrictions on construction hours, with works permitted between 8am and 7pm from Monday to Friday and between 8am and 2pm on Saturdays.

Developers must also submit full details of external finishes, including materials, textures and colours, for approval before construction begins.

Concerns raised during planning process

The planning application for the school buildings Waterford project received one submission from a local resident opposing the development.

The submission raised concerns about how the buildings would be used, as well as potential impacts on privacy for nearby homes.

Issues relating to vermin control were also highlighted.

Additional capacity for growing school needs

The new buildings are expected to provide additional capacity and improved facilities for both schools, particularly in supporting students with additional needs.

The conditional approval marks the next step in progressing the development, subject to compliance with the planning requirements set out by the local authority.
