Waterford is set to host the Thomas Francis Meagher 176th Tricolour Celebration from March 1st to March 3rd this year.
This three day event commemorates the flying of the Irish Tricolour for the first time in 1848 as a symbol of peace and reconciliation by Thomas Francis Meagher. Celebrations mark the life and legacy of Thomas Francis Meagher, an Irish and American Patriot who played a pivotal role in Ireland’s struggle for independence.
The much anticipated 2024 programme, proudly supported by Patron Daniel Mulhall, former Irish Ambassador to the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Malaysia, promises an exciting array of events that pay homage to the life and legacy of Thomas Francis Meagher, and honour the 176th anniversary of first flying of the Irish Tricolour flag and its rich history.
Tricolour Celebration Weekend Highlights
March 1st
Take a deep dive into the historical heart of Waterford with the Thomas Francis Meagher Walking Tour at 6pm, followed by a dinner at Sabai Restaurant. The day concludes with a Peace Vigil at the Edmund Rice Chapel Waterford at 8 PM performed by the acclaimed Island of Ireland Peace Choir.
March 2nd
Engage with esteemed speakers at the Thomas Francis Meagher Public Talks Series from 10am to 2pm at the Medieval Museum, Waterford. Featuring discussions on Meagher’s enduring legacy, and the impactful legacy of the Tricolour.
Thomas Francis Meagher Gala Dinner: An annual highlight event on March 2nd at the Granville Hotel, featuring performances by the Dordán Choir and Late Late Toy Show and Six Nations ‘Ireland’s Call’ star Stevie Mulrooney.
March 3rd
The celebration culminates with the Thomas Francis Meagher Fife & Drum Band at 11am at the Granville Hotel followed by the annual Military Parade, Wreath Laying, and Flag Raising Ceremony at the Waterford Crystal Plaza at 12pm, showcasing a parade of veterans, national anthem performance by Stevie Mulrooney, and the Thomas Francis Meagher Oration.
