Sanofi Waterford has raised more than €52,000 for the Solas Cancer Support Centre, significantly surpassing last year’s total of €43,000 and highlighting the growing support for the vital local service.

The funds were raised through an abseiling event at Croke Park, which saw 52 members of staff take part in the challenge. Co-organised by Al Penkert from Sanofi, the event also involved the support of employees’ families and friends, who helped gather the much-needed donations.

The Solas Centre, based in Waterford, provides free professional support services to people affected by cancer, including patients and their families. Each year, the centre requires close to €1 million to operate and relies heavily on community fundraising efforts to continue offering its services.

This is the second time Sanofi has raised funds for the Solas Centre, further reinforcing its role as a leader in the local business community when it comes to social responsibility and giving back. The money raised will go directly towards supporting hundreds of people in Waterford and the surrounding areas who rely on the Centre during some of the most challenging times in their lives.

Al Penkert from Sanofi spoke to WLR in recent days following the massively successful fundraiser.

“This is our second time in two years organising this event, and it’s been a fantastic fundraiser with amazing involvement from the site, employees, their families, friends, and everyone who donated. These two events have been the biggest fundraisers on-site to date.

“What puts it all into perspective is knowing that hundreds of people will now have access to counselling, complementary therapies, and other supports through Solas. While we’re proud of the money raised, it’s really about the impact on those affected by cancer, and that’s what drives our team to get involved.

“We raised over €52,000 this year and €43,000 previously, showing just how committed everyone here is to making a difference. It’s been a great effort all around.”
