A new Councillor has been co-opted onto Waterford City and County Council.

Sandra Conway will take the seat of her husband Joe Conway, who was recently elected to the Seanad. Cllr. Conway will represent the Tramore and Waterford City West electoral area.

Speaking at the most recent Plenary meeting of Waterford Council, the Independent Councillor thanked her colleagues.

“I want to thank my proposer and seconder Councillor O’Sullivan and Councillor Hannigan and I am looking forward to working with you over the next few years.”

Under the Local Government Act 2001, a casual vacancy for an Independent candidate is taken where a nomination is given by an outgoing candidate, in this case Senator Joe Conway.

Councillor Conway hails from West Waterford, as Councillor Lola O’Sullivan mentioned when proposing Cllr. Conway to the local authority.

“Sandra was born and reared about a half a mile from here just across the causeway in Abbeyside. She and Joe have lived for close on 40 years in Tramore and it’s no exaggeration that they have worked closely together for their adopted town since his election to Tramore Town Council. She knows the town and its people well and I know she will work hard with her councillors to improve our town, our city and our county.”

Councillor Blaise Hannigan seconded Sandra Conway’s co-option to Waterford City and County Council, saying she puts her electoral area first.

I’ve known Sandra for over 20 years and she knows the requirements of a councillor. With people calling to her house and answering phone calls on every election in 2004, she’s seen first hand on the doorstep the requirements the councillor needs and what they have to speak on in the council.”
