The Samaritans are encouraging local businesses and landmarks to illuminate their buildings in green this Thursday.
The Longest Night initiative takes place on the Winter Solstice, December 21st, each year to remind people that the Samaritans are available 24/7 during the Christmas period.
The charity operates a 24-hour helpline service for people who are in distress, struggling to cope, and who are in need of emotional support, including those who are feeling suicidal.
Fintan Duffy, Volunteer Branch Director at Waterford and Southeast Samaritans, said: "We know from our callers that Christmas can be particularly challenging and not the happy time often perceived on television or in ads at this time of year.
"Bereavement, loneliness, relationship and family problems, addictions, abuse, and mental health issues can all feature heavily in people's lives throughout the festive break. It is really important that people know that whatever they are going through, whenever they are going through it, Samaritans are here to listen day and night. We urge anyone in need of support to reach out and call freephone 116 123 or email [email protected]."
Several landmarks in Waterford and Dungarvan were among the 150 sites nationally that participated in Samaritans' Longest Night campaign last year, including Waterford Council Offices in Waterford City and Dungarvan. The Bishops Place, The Theatre Royal. Dooley's Hotel, The Reg Waterford, House of Waterford Crystal, SETU arena, Devereux Man's shop in Dungarvan and The Devonshire Bridge in Dungarvan.
Fintan Duffy added: "It is fantastic that so many sites across Waterford city and County are lighting up in green on the Longest Night to show people that Samaritans are there for them during their darkest hours. We urge as many companies as possible to light up and show their support on the night and register via www.samaritans.ie/longestnight."
In December 2022, volunteers across the country answered almost 35,000 calls for help - including over 950 calls on Christmas Day.
All companies who light up are asked to share any images of their building on social media and tag
@SamaritansIRL (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) and add their branch Twitter name using the hashtags #LongestNight and #SamaritansLongestNight.
