Rural TD'S calling for cash payments to be protected

A motion has been put forward to the government to recognise the importance of cash as a means of payment.

The Rural Independent Group of TD'S says businesses not accepting cash is a "flagrant violation of people's rights"

Vulnerable groups such as elderly or rural residents may not have the same access as others to other means of payment.

They are calling for notes and coins to remain an essential means of payment.

The group is referencing the origins of the state and the people who gave their lives for Ireland and retaining the circulation of money in the country.
