The 13th Annual Waterford Viking Marathon takes place tomorrow, Sunday, June 22nd.

Over 4,500 runners are set to descend upon the Deise for what is sure to be another memorable occasion.

The following roads will be closed to facilitate the 2025 Waterford Viking Marathon:

Road Closures: Saturday 21st June to Sunday 22nd June

Closed from Saturday 4:00pm to Sunday 9:00pm:

  • O’Connell Street (L1502) — From Vulcon Street to Thomas Hill/Hanover Street

Road Closures: Sunday 22nd June

Closed from 6:00am to 10:30am:

  • The Mall, Waterford (R680)

Closed from 8:00am to 3:00pm:

  • Bridge Street (R686)

  • Bilberry Road (L1501)

  • Grattan Quay (L1000)

  • Suir Street (L1500)

  • Mary Street (L90296)

  • Dyehouse Lane (L15002)

  • Penrose Lane (L90015) — Anne Street to the Quay

  • Thomas Street (L5505) — Anne Street to the Quay

  • Thomas Hill (L15021) — Meeting House Lane to the Quay

Closed from 10:00am to 2:00pm:

  • Lissahane (L4015) — From Carrols Cross to Greenway Crossing

  • Ardeenloun Crossing (L8019) — From N25 Cork Road to Greenway Crossing

  • Carrickanure Road (L8017) — Cork Road to Greenway Crossing

Outbound Lane Closures

From 8:00am to 10:00am:

  • Outbound lane on the Quay from Tower Hotel to Rice Bridge:

    • R680 Parade Quay

    • R680 Custom House Quay

    • R680 Coal Quay

    • R680 Meagher’s Quay

    • R680 Merchants Quay

  • Outbound lanes from Rice Bridge (R680) in direction of N25

From 8:00am to 11:00am:

  • Outbound lanes from Sallypark to N25:

    • Sallypark (R448) to Newrath Roundabout

    • R861 from Newrath Roundabout to Roundabout No. 12 at Grannagh and onto N25

County Kilkenny Lane Closures

From 8:00am to 10:30am:

  • Outbound carriageway of the R448 from Sallypark (County Bounds) to Newrath Roundabout

  • Outbound carriageway of the R861 from Newrath Roundabout to Roundabout No. 12 at Grannagh and onto N25 westbound

Traffic Disruption

From 8:30am to 10:30am in Waterford City:

  • R861

  • Roundabout No. 12 on M9/N24/N25 at Grannagh

  • N25 at the Toll Plaza

From 8:30am to 10:30am in County Kilkenny:

  • R448/R861 at Newrath Roundabout

From 8:00am to 2:00pm (Detours in place):

  • The Glen (L1503)

Alternative Routes and Parking

Diversions will be clearly signposted on the day. Local access will be maintained.

There is ample parking available around Waterford city centre, including Bolton Street Car Park, Newtown Road Car Park, Waterside Car Park, Millers Marsh Car Park, Jenkin’s Lane Car Park and on-street parking in Ballybricken as well as numerous car parks along the Quays.
