A referendum on gender equality will be held this November as confirmed by the Government.

Proposals for the constitutional amendments are due to be published by the end of June.

It was recommended by the Citizens Assembly on Gender Equality two years ago and relates to articles 40 and 41 of the Constitution which refers to 'women in the home'.

Leader of the Labour party Ivana Bacik has welcomed the news saying the constitution in 2023 must be equal.

She added:" I chaired the committee on gender equality last year which was asked to consider the 45 recommendations of the citizen's assembly on gender equality which really amount to a blueprint for a more equal Ireland where women and men have equal opportunities."

The Taoiseach, Integration Minister, and Education Minister will officially announce the details later this morning.
