The Solas Cancer Support Centre’s annual Run and Walk for Life saw an unprecedented turnout this weekend, with nearly 4,000 participants coming together in Waterford City on Sunday, 12th October, and along Dungarvan’s Greenway on Saturday, 11th October, in support of individuals and families affected by cancer.
Now in its 17th year, this flagship fundraising event continues to be a beacon of hope, community spirit, and solidarity.
It was officially launched in Waterford by the Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Seamus Ryan, who commended the public for their strong show of support for such a vital service.
A striking feature of this year’s event was the sea of blue t-shirts and vests worn by 27% of participants – a poignant symbol designed to highlight an important message: although 50% of national cancer diagnoses affect men, only 27% of Solas clients are male.

The campaign aimed to raise awareness and spark conversation around encouraging more men to access the Centre’s free, confidential support services.
Last year, the event raised an incredible €185,000, contributing directly to the €1.1 million annual cost of running the Centre’s services.
With community participation stronger than ever, this year’s event is poised to have an even greater impact.

Tracy McDaid, Manager of the Solas Cancer Support Centre, expressed heartfelt gratitude:
“The people of Waterford and surrounding areas have been incredible supporters of Solas. Many of our participants return year after year, and we are so grateful – this is our main annual fundraiser and truly vital to our service. As well as raising funds, the event also gives us the opportunity to raise awareness of our free services and show just how easy it is to engage with Solas.”
She also extended thanks to event partners UPMC, WLR FM, and EirGen Pharma, whose generous contributions were instrumental in the success of this year’s event.
