A group of up to 20 people gathered for an anti-government protest in Waterford City this afternoon.

A number of signs were put on display, including some calling for '24/7 Cardiac Care Now,' and others calling for the protection of free speech.

One of the protesters told WLR News that they are not anti-refugees but they are anti those coming into the country illegally.

Eileen indicated that the housing crisis and rising rents are her main concern.

"I found out nine years ago that I could not live on my own anymore in Ireland because I just couldn't afford the rent on my own," she said.

"And that's when I ended up moving in with my daughter and granddaughter, but we got threatened with an eviction right before the [eviction] ban.

"So that's what we are protesting. It's not that we're against refugees, who we are against are the illegal refugees coming into the country."

A man named John Paul also spoke at the event this afternoon.

"These are just all Irish men and women that just love their country," he explained, "They're seeing what the government have done with their policies and all that stuff that they are forcing upon the Irish people without any vote.

"Our constitution was written that anything to do with resources and all that needs to be put to the people.

"They [the government] are steamrolling us and there's no opposition anymore because the media fail to report on both sides.

"For as long as I can remember, the media have stuck to one side."

Meanwhile, thousands of people have taken to the streets elsewhere today to express solidarity with refugees.

The 'Ireland for All' solidarity march was organised by a coalition that includes community groups, trade unions and political parties.

The marches come amid rising numbers of anti-refugee protests around the country in recent weeks.
